Vampire Knight has its share of sinister secrets and supernatural baddies out for blood, so it's only naturally for the soundtrack to embrace the unsettling nature of Yuki Cross's school life defending the secret population of vampire students. No track does this quite as well as Kanon Wakeshima's 'Still Doll,' which in my opinion is one of the creepiest and eerie closing credits I have seen. I mean this is the best way possible, of course. The song is haunting and melodic, using the mix of foreboding strings with Wakeshima's soft, spooky, and gothic voice to evoke the danger inherent in Yuki's relationships with both Zero and Kaname. Every time the song and credits conclude with the words "still you do not answer," I get the shivers along with the feeling that the tentative safety of Cross Academy is about to collapse at any moment.
Vampire Knight brings the spooky back to supernatural. The vampires may be pretty, but the feeling of something sinister lurking is always present. |
